The following is a guest post by Captain Dave, Founder of “Vegan Sailing”.
Thank you for the opportunity to tell your readers about Vegan Sailing…Eat, Sail, Love in the Virgin Islands! Vegan Sailing offers a fabulous sailing vacation in the Caribbean paradise of the Virgin Islands. Welcome aboard Bel Ami, a 53 foot world class cruising sailboat, serving artfully prepared healthy Vegan cuisine on your private crewed sailing yacht. Ideal for one couple, Vegan Sailing can accommodate up to two couples each in their own private stateroom, or one couple and up to 2 singles. Most charters run 1 week, although customized lengths are available.
I’m Captain Dave, owner of Bel Ami, and I’ve experienced a nutritional revolution in my life. I have been sailing the waters of the East Caribbean for the past 5 years from the Bahamas to Grenada. I started providing crewed yacht charters in the Virgin Islands several years ago (Bel Ami Voyages…Sail Into Romance). In July 2011 I developed chest pain and was diagnosed with coronary artery disease. I discovered that this condition can be effectively treated and eliminated with whole foods, plant based nutrition. Campbell, Esselstyn and McDougall became my heroes. I have since experienced a rejuvenation in my vitality and well being. Another consequence was the elimination of other medical conditions that I suffered from. I no longer have gout, psoriasis, heartburn/reflux, and enjoy eating all that I desire with no weight gain whatsoever!
Vegan Sailing was a natural consequence to my Vegan nutrition revolution.
At 61 years old, I have had an interesting life for which I am very grateful. Not only am I a sailboat captain, but also a physician. You can find out more about me on my professional medical website. I am Board Certified by the American Board of Preventive Medicine, and have a Master’s Degree in Public Health. This past fall I completed the Whole Foods Plant Based Nutrition course at Cornell University and earned my Certificate Degree in Plant Based Nutrition. I was astounded at the amount of excellent scientific/medical literature in support of whole foods plant based nutrition, and am now committed to providing this nutrition in a sailing/cruising vacation.
What do we do on a Vegan Sailing vacation? Aside from enjoying delicious, healthy and artfully prepared Vegan cuisine, we explore exciting and beautiful underworld reefs, snorkeling such wonderful spots as the Indians and Caves of Norman Island. We hike to the top of the once volcanic Virgin Islands for fabulous vistas. Enjoy vegetable roti at Gertrudes on White Bay, Jost Van Dyke. Explore the beaches of Anegada, which seem to go on forever. Shop till you drop if that’s your thing. Rendezvous scuba diving is easily arranged. Read, play cards, dominos, scrabble. And of course, relax and do nothing at all! The point is to get away from it all, get into the “island time” groove, and hang out on your private crewed yacht while enjoying delicious Vegan fare.
Bel Ami, a 1998 Amel Supermaramu, was designed with sailing the world in mind. She can sleep up to 6 comfortably. She is luxuriously appointed, complete with air-conditioning, full galley, electric flush toilets, and a 53 x 37 inch movie screen for movie night (Forks over Knives, anyone?). She exceeds all US Coast Guard safety standards. As captain, I hold a 100 ton Masters USCG captain’s license. Most people book a week’s vacation, which is about the right amount of time to cruise all of the “must see” sites. However, trips can be customized to longer and shorter durations.
