Hello Again Vegan Travelers!
As you travel throughout the world, you will find many ethnic dishes that are served with a sauce. While the vegetable, grain, or pasta entree may be vegan itself, the sauce is not necessarily so. Of course, if you are dining in a vegan restaurant, the sauce indeed will be vegan. There are many countries which are known for their distinctive, wonderfully flavorful sauces. The following will note some of the most popular ethnic sauces, as well as stating whether or not they are vegan.
North America:
Chocolate Mole Sauce – Mexico. This sauce contains Mexican chocolate, chiles, cumin, tomatoes, cumin, and coriander. It is great with tamales or enchiladas. It is vegan, as long as the chocolate does not contain milk.
Salsa Sauce – Mexico. This sauce contains peppers and tomatoes. It is good with tortillas. It is vegan.
Chili Sauce – Mexico. This sauce contains chiles and tomatoes. It is vegan if the broth is vegetable based. It may be served with tofu or vegetables.
Jamaican Jerk Marinade Sauce – Jamaica. This sauce contains garlic, spices, and peppers. It is vegan. The marinade is typically served with meat. However, if it is served with grilled tofu, it is indeed vegan.
Europe:
Pesto Sauce – Italy. This sauce contains tomatoes, garlic, peppers, and olive oil. Great with pasta. It may or may not be vegan, depending on whether or not it contains cheese. Please ask your waiter.

Asia:
Peanut Sauce – Thailand. This sauce may or may not contain fish sauce. As it typically does, it is NOT vegan. Please check with your waiter. Vegan versions may be served with rice and vegetable curry, salads, or pad thai.
Indian Curry – India. This sauce contains ginger, garlic, tomatoes, tumeric. It typically is vegan. Vegetable dishes are served with curry.
Raita Sauce – India. This sauce contains dairy (yogurt). It is NOT vegan.
Thai Curry(Red, Green, Panang, Masaman) – Thailand. This sauce contains chile peppers, coconut milk, and other herbs. It may or may not be vegan. Some restaurants pre-make the sauce with fish sauce. Other restaurants make it as needed and can alter the ingredients to cater to your request for no fish sauce. Every Thai curry is great with tofu and vegetable entrees.
So ends our review of ethnic sauces. I hope you all enjoy the vegan sauces with the vegetable dishes you select during your international travels!
I love your blog and think its an amazing vegan resource but I just wanted to ask about Italian pesto.
Most pesto sauces I see here have parmesan in them, definately all the major supermarket brands and artisan brands I’ve seen do.
As a vegan I find that I have to specifically buy a dairy-free pesto and don’t get pesto in restaurants because I know that it’ll most likely contain cheese.
