As every vegan knows, there is a list of ingredients we can not ingest and food preparation steps that need to be followed to a “T”. If you find yourself dining with your tour group at a non-vegan establishment there are questions you must ask the waitstaff.
Remember to ask the following questions to your waiter at your restaurant:
1. Does the entree contain dairy(milk, cheese, butter), eggs/egg whites, or honey?
2. Is the food cooked in vegetable oil?
3. For beans, rice, and couscous, be especially careful to ask if it has been cooked in lard, beef fat, pork fat, or chicken broth ?
* 4. Especially in Asian countries, ask if they use separate pots & pans to cook or stir-fry the veggie dish or has it been transferred to the same pan which had previously contained meat? Sometimes they only rinse the pan with water(no soaps) before using it again to cook veggies this time.
5. Ask if there is any fish product(or fish sauce, anchovies) or chicken in your meal ? For whatever reason, certain cultures do NOT consider seafood or poultry to be living creatures such as mammals. They assume that these are vegetarian.
Your tour guide or your Vegan Passport book can assist with the language translations.
Happy vegan eating!
