These days there are several choices for budget-conscious travelers. Some of the low cost, popular airlines around include Southwest Airlines, JetBlue, Spirit Airlines, and AirTran. One of the issues on these inexpensive airlines is that they do not serve meals, regardless of the length of the flight. This holds true for both vegan meals and carnivore meals alike. They do offer several snacks. Some of the budget airlines offer free snacks. Others charge a small fee. Most of the snacks are not vegan. It is important to read the labels for some items such as the crackers to determine if they are made with butter. Bagel packages must be checked for ingredients such as eggs. The safe bets for vegans are the vegan travel snack food raisins, nuts, and pretzels. These vegan snacks need to tie you over until you reach your destination.
For longer flights cross country or to the Caribbean or Central America, it is best for vegans to bring their own vegan travel food such as sandwiches (Tofurky, falafel, peanut butter).
UPDATE 2015 – JetBlue now offers vegan items in a snack box.
