Vegan Food Truck Festival In Boston – Tourist In Your Own Backyard

Food Truck Festivals are “all the rage” these days. Much to my delight, an all VEGAN Food Truck Festival was held on September 12th in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The vendors arrived from across New England and beyond for this “first of its kind” festival. Most of these trucks are not typically 100% vegan on a regular basis. However, the festival organizers gave the vendors strict rules and regulations regarding 100% vegan ingredients, clean cooking equipment, and no cross-contamination. Boston has several vegetarian/vegan food trucks that were not included in this event. This gave me the opportunity to try new and different vendors and cuisines at the festival. Everything from nutritious international meals to healthy beverages to decadent desserts could be found throughout the day.

I purchased a special pass to arrive prior to the huge crowds. After strolling through the vendor space, I headed back to the entrance area to see throngs of people lining up to attend the event. Attending food vendors were listed on a board next to the registration table. General admission was a mere $10 plus whatever food was purchased throughout the day. Food trucks were lined up one after another, in each section of the outdoor space.

My first purchase was a rice burger and chili fries from Riceburg food truck (Riceburg Food Truck). This new food truck opened for business during the summer of 2015. They offer healthier options that combine East and West cuisine. Their sandwich buns are actually made of Japanese small grain rice.

My selection was the crispy vegan “chicken” with sweet and sour sauce sandwiched between two of those rice buns. For a side, I ordered the fries with curry sesame seaweed powder. Yum! What a great tasting and unique sandwich!

A refreshing hibiscus tea washed down my great meal.

For a snack, I opted for a tamarind flavored ice from yet another food truck. Another good choice.

“The Roving Lunchbox Food Truck”(Roving Lunchbox) offered mini savory or sweet pies for purchase. I chose a squash savory pie in a flaky pastry. This was delish as well!

Long lines of people were forming outside of many food trucks, as more and more attendees arrived. The “Like No Udder” truck (Like No Udder)attracted a huge crowd as always. The all vegan, soft serve ice cream truck from Rhode Land, offered a free small soft serve with sprinkles, included in the early admission price.

“Dragon Roll and Grill” (Dragon Roll and Grill) from Malden, Massachusetts is another food truck that was quite popular with many attendees. Their menu includes several kinds of sushi with various sauces.

As I wandered onto another section of the event, a live band was performing some catchy upbeat tunes.

Alas! Some sweet treats greeted my sight! Lulu’s Sweet Shoppe (Lulu’s Cupcakes) of Boston’s North End, was trying out some vegan flavors that they hope to introduce in their retail shop. The chocolate cherry and “cookies and cream” flavors were really delicious.

The “Boston Projuice”(Projuice) truck offered many varieties of nutritious raw juices and other juice products. I purchased a mint ice pop and a berry juice. Both were amazing. You could definitely taste each fresh flavor!

I picked up my pace and made sure that I visited every food truck and their offerings that afternoon. My first instinct was to sample the Jamaican food truck’s(Jamaica Mi Hungry) cuisine for my dinner. However, due to the extremely long line at this popular vendor, I chose another option. I did take the opportunity to photograph a Jamaican tofu curry dish that another visitor had purchased.

For my dinner option, I selected a large healthy salad from the Sante food truck (Sante).

All in all, I’d say the first ever “Boston Vegan Food Truck Festival” was a success! The many “vegan-friendly for a day” food trucks served up lots of wonderful eats, as well as some of the local vegan food truck standbys such as “Rhythm N’ Wraps”(Rhythm N’ Wraps), “Like No Udder”(Like No Udder), and “Bon Me”(Bon Me). From flavorful Asian, African, and other ethnic cuisines to American favorites and desserts, the festival certainly satisfied the taste buds of the happy attendees. Vegan travel in your own backyard can bring great experiences. Be sure to lookout for vegan food truck festivals in your own local town.
