***This vacation was taken before I started blogging and before I started photos of my meals. It still contains relevant info on sightseeing and dining.***
My typical vacation style is a fast-paced, activity-filled itinerary with not much down time. However, I made one exception to this. I wanted to visit the Caribbean, the Bahamas in particular and it seemed like a cruise was a good way to accomplish this. My holiday was booked with a well-known, established cruise line. We left the port of Miami and sailed down to the Bahamas for a few days. Of course, the cruise ship was filled with a few fun activities such as live theater, a dance club, and shopping til you drop. The buffet was gigantic with enough veggies and fruits to satisfy a vegan. I recommend everyone to go on one cruise in their lifetime..but just one. For me, its best to have a land only, action-packed vacation.
Anyway..Our group arrived in Nassau after only a day on the high seas. We got aboard a tour bus and proceeded to tour the city and the island, passing by forts and gardens and government buildings. When it was time to eat, I found myself scurrying about town very worried. I landed at a pizza shop and ordered a veggie sub. It turns out that Nassau is not very vegan-friendly at all! Very disappointing! I spent the rest of the afternoon shopping in town for souvenirs.
The next day we set out for quite an adventure. My group was scheduled to take a large catamaran boat out into the waters for scuba diving and watching the sea life. As a non-swimmer, I had to skip this adventure. The option I was given was to be dropped off at a nearby small island to enjoy its beaches and landscape. What a picturesque little island it was! Pure white, soft sand massaging my toes and glistening aquamarine waters in my gaze. Upon return, we went on board our cruise ship for dinner and live theater.
The next morning, we walked through the famous Atlantis resort to check it out. Our tour group had been invited to a beach party on the cruise line’s private island nearby. We had a BBQ, at which I had a selection of corn on the cob, salads, and fruits on which to feast. In the evening, our tour group went into town to attend a Caribbean music and dance performance show. Some of us even went on stage to join the performances at the end of the night. What a fun way to end our holiday!
Then time to board the ship and head back to Florida.
Nassau does not have vegetarian or vegan-friendly dining or restaurants. I hear that Atlantis resort offers veggie-friendly options upon request. I also know there is an Indian restaurant in town which has veggie-friendly options. That restaurant is called Gaylord’s Indian Restaurant . I did not have time away from my group excursions to locate or dine at that restaurant. Had I found the time, I would have definitely eaten there!
All in all, Nassau, Bahamas is very picturesque, but not very vegan-friendly, unless you chose to eat onboard your cruise ship or dine at the Indian restaurant.
