Vegan Travel in London, England

***Note-This trip was taken before I started blogging, or taking photos of my meals or owned digital camera. However, there is still some good information on sightseeing.***
I traveled to London, England about 10 years ago. I was vegetarian at the time and did not become vegan until 2 years later. Although my trip took place a while ago, it is important to note this popular travel destination, because it is a very vegan-friendly region, in addition to being a wonderful hub for sightseeing! In fact, these days the London/Brighton region maintains the reputation of being one of the most vegan-friendly places on the planet!

I visited London for approximately 3 days with a tour group consisting of young adults 18 years of age to 30 somethings. After we settled in at our lovely b&b, we stopped by a neighborhood pub for sandwiches and pub fries with vinegar. It is always a treat for me to dine as the locals, so eating my french fries with vinegar instead of ketchup was a must do activity!

I joined my tour group for a city tour which included Big Ben, the London Bridge, the prime minister’s home, Buckingham Palace, and the changing of the guard. The white cliffs of Dover greeted us upon our departure from the UK.

These are the obligatory stops for tourists here. In the evening, my group spent time shopping and taking in the sights and sounds of Picadilly Circus. Its shops, theater, and huge, neon signs reminded me of Times Square in New York City.

The next morning, we had some time on our own to visit the attractions of our individual choosing. I chose to visit the Madame Tussaud’s wax museum and the British Museum. The wax museum contained a vast selection of royal and celebrity wax figures, including Alfred Hitchcock. I took a photo with a James Bond wax figure.

My next stop, the British Museum houses many artifacts from civilizations all over the world including African, Asian, and European collections of art. It would take many days to view all of the collections. However, I recommend at least visiting for a brief period.

I found the taxi drivers to be friendly and helpful. One of them even gave me a private tour on the way back to the hotel as he pointed out various places along the way, including Alfred Hitchcock’s house. I then took a double decker bus ride around the city for the first time!

I wish I remembered the vegetable dishes that I ate for dinner.
What I would like to stress is that London currently has the reputation for being a very vegan-friendly city! http://www.veganlondon.co.uk/visiting.htm. The coastal town of Brighton just one hour away is known for its many vegan and vegetarian restaurants. London proper has vegan accommodations and many vegan restaurants. These restaurants run the gamut from raw, macrobiotic, Asian to Mediterranean.

Vegans will be very happy spending their holidays in this cosmopolitan, yet historic city!

  1. Thanks for this article. I found it very helpful as I will be traveling to London in November. It is good to hear that there will be places for me to eat (as a vegan, that’s not always the case).
